May is for Meetings
→ This edition provides ways to reflect on your meetings. Don’t forget, we are half way through Q2 already and getting close to half way through 2024! Don’t delay on making small changes to position yourself and team to reach your goal
THINK
📏 On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best, how do you rate your meetings?
❓Why did you give that rating?
🧐 Who can help you make your meetings better?
→ Email me if you’d like to learn more about how I can help your team and lead a workshop on “Meetings that Don’t Suck.”
PRACTICE
Meetings are where important conversations and decisions are made for the organization. Remember that meetings shouldn’t be dreaded. Your team should WANT to participate in meetings! Below are three ways you make them better…QUICKLY.
Leadership Team Meetings | REVIEW YOUR AGENDA
→ Make sure you have a few minutes of connection time to start the meeting. Listen to what’s happening outside of work.
→ Leave time at the end to recap action items. Does everyone know what’s due and when?
Staff Meetings | IMPROVE THE EXPERIENCE
→ Spend a few minutes brainstorming (or better yet delegate this) of small ways to make meetings better and start testing these out. Think day, time, location, vibe, the right person leading, how we celebrate, how we provide feedback.
1x1 Meetings | MAKE THESE NON-NEGOTIABLE
→ Start by adding these as recurring meetings to your calendar. When you cancel these you are sending the message that the person is not important.
💡 Remember, YOU CAN CHANGE the perception of meetings within your organization by making meetings great. It is up to you.
DO
Add this “SHRM Must-Read New Book” book to your spring reading list.
→ Glad We Met: The Art and Science of 1:1 Meetings is a book full of research, interviews and evidence collected over 20 years to encourage you to become intentional with your 1x1 meetings. It covers topics such as:
Why 1x1s are so critical to team success
Designing 1x1 agendas
Personalizing the meeting (around you and your direct reports)
How often to schedule 1x1s
Improving your coaching, listening and feedback
